Celebrating the Heart of Our Mission: Volunteer Appreciation Month

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month—a time to recognize the incredible individuals who give their time, energy, and compassion to make our work possible. At the humane society, volunteers are more than helpers—they are the heartbeat of everything we do.

From walking dogs and socializing shy cats to assisting at events, fostering animals, and supporting daily operations, our volunteers step in wherever they’re needed most. During busy seasons—especially kitten and puppy season—their support becomes even more critical. They help us stretch resources further, provide more one-on-one care to animals, and ultimately save more lives.

But beyond the tasks, it’s the love they bring that truly makes a difference. A volunteer sitting quietly with a nervous dog, offering patience and reassurance. Someone taking the time to bottle-feed orphaned kittens through the night. These moments matter—and they change outcomes.

Volunteer Spotlight: Callie

This month, we’re proud to highlight Callie and her family, Just one of our dedicated volunteers who truly embodies what it means to give back.

Callie says: "My husband and I decided when my oldest son turned six that we would sign him—and ourselves—up to volunteer with the Humane Society. He had already shown the same love for dogs that my husband and I share, so it felt like the perfect fit.

Little did I know, when I signed up and completed my orientation, that I was opening the door to not only a meaningful new chapter of giving back for our family, but also a deeper understanding of everything that happens behind the scenes—and the incredible love each and every animal receives from employees and volunteers.

From the pet food pantry and food drives to filling blessing boxes and organizing fundraisers and events, the literal blood, sweat, and tears that go into being a voice and advocate for these animals is something that truly cannot be measured.

In just one short year, our family has learned so much more than we ever imagined. It has been an eye-opening experience. The values we’re gaining through volunteering with the Wellington Humane Society are helping us instill compassion and kindness in our two young children—and the feeling of giving back and helping both animals and people in need is something I will carry with me forever."

We are incredibly grateful for Callie, her family, and volunteers who give so selflessly!

Thank You to Our Volunteers

To every volunteer who has walked through our doors, donated their time, or supported our mission in any way—thank you. Your impact is real, and it is lasting.

If you’ve ever considered volunteering, there’s no better time to get involved. Whether you have a few hours a week or just want to help occasionally, there’s a place for you here—and countless animals who will benefit from your care.

Because of our volunteers, we’re able to do more. And together, we’re building a more compassionate community for animals and the people who love them.
